Preserving traditional know-how and combining it with the contemporary. Here are some key parts of our story :
Our business, ‘Création Catalane’, was created in February 2008; born out of friendship, family history at the heart of espadrille production and from a dream: to revive this skilled craft and for it to endure.
It was here, in St Laurent de Cerdans, in the 19th century, that the wonderful story of the espadrille was born. A tale of a traditional craft which developed into a flourishing industry and which gave families in the entire valley a livelihood for a hundred years.
From the 1960s production went into decline, caused mainly by cheaper, foreign imports, with factories closing one after the other. From 15 factories in the 1930s, today we are the only one..
Nowadays we make Catalan espadrilles called ‘vigatanes’ in Catalan and pronounced «bigatanes».
We set up our workshop, offices and shop in a former espadrille factory which we have restored and which complies to modern work standards and practices.
It is the harmony of colours found in the fabrics we use, most of which come from the nearby ‘Toiles du Soleil’ factory, which bring the contemporary touch to our designs; while we continue to preserve the traditional way of making the espadrilles. We also use Liberty fabrics with their pretty, soft-coloured designs.
Let yourself be tempted by our espadrilles; light, comfortable and colourful. Your feet will thank you for it!
